Since Friday (May 1) was a national holiday for Labor Day and we weren't sure how much would be closed, we decided it would be a good day to explore
Fourvière Hill, the enormous hill that rises immediately to the west of Vieux Lyon, where our apartment is located. We know the hill houses all of the following, although we did not find quite all of these on our first trip up to the top: a youth hostel, a hospital, a Roman amphitheater that is still used for outdoor concerts in the summer, a Gallo-Roman history museum affiliated with said amphitheater, ruins of at least one Roman aqueduct, and, perhaps most significantly, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, which can be seen perched on the hilltop from miles away. We ran out of steam before we had fully explored everything, and the amphitheater was quite nifty and definitely merits a return trip, so we will be trekking up the hill again sometime soon, I'm sure. (Or maybe next time we will take the funicular....)
